The Serengeti Game, Reimagined: Activate Learning's Newest Virtual Investigation® for OpenSciEd High School Biology
The Serengeti Game has a lot to love. There is also a lot that can potentially go sideways. Tokens get misplaced, groups lose track of whose turn it is, and invalid moves have a way of sending the whole table back to square one. It is a rich, rigorous investigation, and it deserves a version of itself that lets the science take center stage.
That version is here. The Serengeti Game Virtual Investigation® is an interactive digital version of the predator-prey modeling investigation from OpenSciEd High School Biology Unit B.1, Lesson 7, available exclusively on the Activate Learning Digital Platform.
What is the Serengeti Game Virtual Investigation®?
The Serengeti Game is one of the most compelling investigations in OpenSciEd High School Biology. Students take on the roles of predators and prey, modeling how group behavior affects survival across four seasons of gameplay. The discussion that follows, about what the model can and can't tell us, and what patterns emerge across groups, is rich, rigorous, and worth protecting.
The virtual version puts the whole Serengeti on screen: a polished, top-down digital environment where wildebeest herds, hyena clans, and lion prides play out across the landscape in 3D. But more than the visuals, its functionality makes the difference in a real classroom.
Built to Solve Real Classroom Challenges
The physical Serengeti Game is a great investigation. It's also, frankly, a logistical lift. The virtual version handles the hard parts so students can stay focused on the science.
Flexible for Any Group Size
Flexible role assignment means any role can be handed to a bot, so groups of one, two, or three students can each play a complete game: no awkward regrouping, no one sitting out.

Fast, Accurate Setup
Click-to-place markers make setup and movement fast and accurate. Students click a highlighted spot, and the piece snaps into place- no fumbling with physical tokens and cards across the table. Dice rolls and event cards keep the action moving naturally.

Complete Data, Every Time
Every action across all four seasons is automatically captured in an interaction log, so students always have complete, accurate data to analyze, even if they were absent, ran short on time, or made a mistake along the way. Students can also review each of the four turns to see how cards and hunts affected the herd, and save and resume their place at the end of each turn.

No More Lost Turns
Built-in guardrails keep every group on track. A persistent banner always shows students the next step, only valid moves are highlighted, and the game simply won't let students break the rules. No more lost turns, no more starting over.

Seamlessly Integrated
The whole experience lives on the Activate Learning Digital Platform, which means students play the game and record their reasoning on the same screen, seamlessly embedded in OpenSciEd Unit B.1. With the logistics handled, students can put their energy where it belongs: identifying how group behavior increases survival for predators and prey, and reasoning about what their model can and can't tell them.

A First for OpenSciEd High School
The Serengeti Game Virtual Investigation® holds a distinction beyond what it does in the classroom. It is the first Virtual Investigation® Activate Learning has ever published for OpenSciEd High School, and it signals where things are headed.
With roughly 45 high school Virtual Investigations® currently in development across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, the library is growing quickly. They will roll out this fall as development wraps up, bringing the same curriculum-aligned approach that OpenSciEd K-8 teachers have come to rely on into high school classrooms for the first time.
Less Setup. Less Confusion. More Science.
The Serengeti Game Virtual Investigation® is available now on the Activate Learning Digital Platform for schools and districts using OpenSciEd High School Biology. Whether it becomes your primary way of running the investigation, a lifeline for absent students, or a tool for keeping groups on track during a shortened period, it is built to make the Serengeti Game more accessible, more reliable, and more engaging.
