Activate Learning Digital Platform Earns the ISTE Seal
Activate Learning Digital Platform Earns the ISTE Seal
An independent review validates the platformโs alignment with the ISTE Standards and its commitment to high-quality, equitable science learning.
Activate Learning is pleased to announce that the Activate Learning Digital Platform has been awarded the ISTE Seal by the International Society for Technology in Education.
This recognition follows a rigorous, independent evaluation conducted by a distinguished panel of experts in education, instruction, and technology, and confirms that the platform meets the highest standards in learning sciences, user experience, accessibility, and content quality.
For schools and districts implementing OpenSciEd Kโ12, this designation represents meaningful third-party validation of the platformโs design and educational effectiveness.
About the ISTE Seal
The ISTE Seal is awarded only after an extensive review process in which trained evaluators assess a product against the ISTE Standards for Students and five dimensions of quality: user interface and agency, learning design, digital pedagogy, inclusivity, and assessment and data. Products must meet expectations across all dimensions to receive the ISTE Seal.
For educators and district leaders evaluating educational technology, the ISTE Seal provides independent, expert-validated assurance that a product promotes critical technology skills, supports research-backed instructional practices, and is designed to advance student learning in meaningful ways.
Review Findings
The Official Findings Report confirmed that the Activate Learning Digital Platform supports all six ISTE Standards for Students, from Empowered Learner to Global Collaborator. Several findings across the five review dimensions are particularly noteworthy.
In the area of learning design, reviewers found that teachers can assign and sequence lessons based on instructional needs and that structured reflection prompts โconnect new learning to prior knowledge, with regular opportunities for students to revisit and revise their conclusions.โ This approach reflects established principles from the learning sciences and supports the iterative sensemaking at the core of the OpenSciEd curriculum.
On digital pedagogy, the report noted that students โdevelop explanations and solutions based on phenomena through sensemaking and problem-solving tasksโ and engage in โstructured problem definition activities that include data collection, testing, and iterative refinement.โ Built-in tools guide students through the full arc of scientific inquiry, from brainstorming and data collection through analysis, testing, and solution iteration.
Regarding inclusivity, reviewers found that the platformโs content โreflects a range of people, cultures, and lived experiences,โ with representation that is integrated authentically throughout. Accessibility features include text-to-speech with read-along highlighting, display adjustments, and translation in 140+ languages.
Reviewers recognized the Activate Learning Digital Platformโs robust assessment tools, citing โa variety of assessment types and submission formatsโ that โprovide students with multiple ways to demonstrate their understanding.โ
Implications for Teachers
โEarning the ISTE Seal is a meaningful validation of the work our team puts into building a platform grounded in the learning sciences and designed for every student. The ISTE review confirmed what we hear from teachers every day โ that the platform supports rigorous, phenomena-based inquiry in ways that are equitable, accessible, and aligned to best practices in science education.โ

For teachers using the Activate Learning Digital Platform with OpenSciEd Kโ12, this recognition affirms the platformโs capacity to support rigorous, phenomena-based science instruction. The ISTE review provides independent confirmation that the platform is designed not simply to deliver content digitally, but to actively support the inquiry, sensemaking, and collaborative problem-solving that define high-quality science education.
Implications for District Leaders
For curriculum directors and technology leaders, the ISTE Seal addresses a fundamental question in edtech evaluation: how can districts be confident that a product will deliver on its educational promise?
The ISTE Seal provides a rigorous, third-party answer. It offers documented evidence that the platform meets high standards across learning science, user experience, accessibility, and content quality โ and can support the kind of equitable, high-quality science instruction that districts are working to achieve.
โThis recognition reinforces our commitment to building technology that serves teachers and students, not just checking boxes. Every decision comes back to one question: does this makes learning more effective, more equitable, and easier for teachers to use? The ISTE Seal tells us weโre on the right track.โ
